What will I study?

The course is delivered as an online engineering course, consisting of two 20 credit units. The first unit is a recommended unit which is designed to deliver some fundamental learning required to progress onto the second, specific core unit.

Unit 1: Automotive Engineering Systems (recommended*)

This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of advanced automotive engineering systems, with a focus on vehicle dynamics, powertrain technologies, electric and hybrid vehicles, and automotive safety systems. The unit integrates theoretical knowledge, preparing students to work in the design, analysis, and implementation of automotive technologies. Through project-based learning and case studies, students will explore modern challenges in the automotive industry, including the move toward sustainable and autonomous vehicles.

Unit 2: Electric Vehicle Technology (core)

This unit introduces learners to the fundamental engineering and technology behind electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). It explores the historical evolution, recent advancements, and state-of-the-art developments in electric vehicle technology.

Learners will study EV systems and parameters, energy sources, battery technology, and the infrastructure required to support EV adoption. The unit also examines the broader impact of EVs on power systems, energy consumption, the environment, and the economy.

On successful completion, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of why EVs were developed, how they function, the infrastructure they require, and their societal impact.

* The recommended unit can be replaced by a different unit of your choice depending on your personal preference, or previous learning experience.

A Practical and Forward-Thinking Course

This diploma integrates two key areas of study: Automotive Engineering Systems and Electric Vehicle Technology. Together, they provide a comprehensive understanding of vehicle design, performance, and energy efficiency, helping students bridge the gap between conventional automotive engineering and the innovations driving electric mobility.

The programme explores the core principles of vehicle dynamics, examining how handling, stability, and aerodynamics influence overall performance. Learners will gain insight into modern powertrain technologies, comparing the efficiency of internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and fully electric drivetrains. There is also a strong focus on automotive safety, evaluating how active and passive safety systems enhance road safety and protect occupants.

Beyond traditional automotive engineering, the course delves into electric vehicle technology, exploring its evolution, current advancements, and future potential. Students will study battery technologies, energy sources, and hybrid energy integration, gaining an understanding of how energy storage and distribution impact vehicle efficiency. The role of EV infrastructure, including charging networks and grid integration, is also a key focus, ensuring students grasp the broader impact of electrification on energy systems, the environment, and the economy.

By the end of the programme, learners will have a deep understanding of both conventional automotive principles and the rapidly advancing field of electric mobility, preparing them to contribute to the future of transportation.
